Insomnia for Wind Quintet (2009)
PROGRAM NOTE:
I.- Onset
II.- Middle
III.- Terminal
Insomnia is a presentation of three patterns of sleep disorder: onset, middle, and terminal
insomnia. The first movement, “Onset” depicts the trouble a person might have falling
asleep at the beginning of the night, while “Middle” portrays waking during the night
with difficulty maintaining sleep, and “Terminal” waking in the early morning. All the
movements employ short rhythmic motives and pitch sets which represent the fleeting
anxieties that make sleeping difficult. The five instruments have more or less
independent roles; interrupting, merging, and dovetailing in, through, and around each
other ultimately uniting for the moments when sleep finally comes (or the sleeper is
jarred awake by an alarm!).
The composer would like to thank her sister, Nayoung Kim, MD, for her detailed
explanations of the various symptoms and characteristic types of insomnia.

DURATION:
