E. P. U. M. (E, Ppun, Uhm, Ma), for FLUTE, MARIMBA, and piano (2004)
PROGRAM NOTE:
E ppun uhm ma, Korean for "Pretty Mother", employs a tonal matrix as an organizing force behind the pitches. The initial theme of the "E" movement is divided into three phrases. The first phrase becoming the basis of the matrix of the "P" movement, the second phrase the basis of the "U" movement matrix, and phrase three the basis of the "M" matrix. Organizing pitches in this way creates music that runs the gamut of tonality, chromaticism, polytonality, and atonality. A continual argument between consonance and dissonance, the internal conflict of the music at times forces the players to take sides.
INSTRUMENTATION:
Flute
Marimba
Piano
DURATION:
E - ca. 1’33’’
P - ca. 1’13’’
U - ca. 3’ 57’’
M - ca. 2’ 02’
