Discourse upon Discord for Alto Flute and Violin (2006)
PROGRAM NOTE:
This composition challenges the capabilities of the performers to the utmost. In utilizing two instruments whose characteristics tend to favor single lines in counterpoint, there has been created a technical examination of rhythm, meter and melody, while at the same time, conducting an artistic exploration of sound and space. In particular, this piece contains many of the effects capable of and specific to each instrument, and pushes the performers’ limits by engaging the instruments in a wide variety of ranges. Contrasts within the piece occur at several levels: polyrhythmic passages are particularly frequent, and the dialogue between the two voices is augmented as motives pass between the two and occur simultaneously. The busy, almost frenetic character of the piece represents a continuity of style among the composer’s previous works.
DURATION: ca. 4'
